Wat Palad (or Wat Pha Lat) is a hidden gem tucked away in the heart of the jungle in Chiang Mai. It’s one of the most peaceful and enchanting places in the area. This beautifully crafted temple offers a serene escape amidst the lush greenery of the jungle.” This temple is nestled in stunning surroundings, making it truly special. Unlike Doi Suthep or Phra Singh, the temples here are relatively small and lack opulence. However, for us, this was part of its charm. The presence of a stream and the surrounding jungle enhances the beauty of this place. Inside the compound, there are well-maintained walking paths. It’s certainly a destination worth visiting.

This is Chiang Mai’s most important and most visible landmark. According to legend, holy relics discovered during the reign of King Kuena (1355-1385) were placed in a howdah on the back of a white elephant, which carried them to Wat Phrathat Doi Suthep. The elephant then dropped dead due to fatigue in the 16th century. The temple has been expanded or restored several times since then. A flight of 306 steps, bordered by a Naga balustrade, leads up from the parking area to the temple. It features beautifully decorated buildings and a Lanna-style chedi covered with engraved gold plates, flanked by four ornamental umbrellas.
