Ban Rak Thai (Mae Aw) – A Beautiful and Tranquil Village in Mae Hong Son, Northern Thailand. Located some 35 kilometers from Mae Hong Son, this beautiful village, also known as Ban Rak Thai (Love Thai Village), is nestled in a valley surrounded by hills and tea plantations on the edge of a reservoir. The highland village, sitting at an elevation of 1,800 meters above sea level, enjoys a cold climate and fresh air year-round. Historically, Ban Rak Thai was founded by former Kuomintang soldiers who migrated from Yunnan Province, China, after the Communist takeover. Today, the village retains a strong Chinese influence, with many signs in Chinese, buildings in Chinese style, and much of the population speaking a heavily accented version of Mandarin Chinese. Ban Rak Thai is also well-known for its tea products.

The Mae Hong Son Loop covers just under 800 km and includes 1,864 turns through some of the most beautiful countryside in Thailand!

Pai is a small town in northern Thailand’s Mae Hong Son Province, near the Myanmar border, about 80 km (50 miles) north of Chiang Mai on the northern route to Mae Hong Son. Situated along the Pai River, this charming town offers many spots for scenic photos and is surrounded by mountains.

TOUR DESCRIPTION

Day 1: Chiang Mai to Mae Hong Son

Start your journey from your hotel in Chiang Mai, driving for approximately 1.5 hours to visit Mok Fah Waterfall. Continue the drive into the mountains and descend into the Pai River valley. After a 1.5-hour drive, reach Pai and stop at the Memorial Bridge (the World War II Japanese Bridge), a popular photo spot. From there, drive another 1.5 hours to Muser Dam village, Ban Jabo (a Black Lahu community), famous for its “swinging legs” cafe, a favorite among both locals and tourists heading to Pai or Mae Hong Son. Continue driving for about 2 hours to Baan Rak Thai, a picturesque village set in a valley surrounded by hills, offering stunning lake views. The lakeshore has cafes and restaurants with panoramic views, and Ban Rak Thai is renowned for its tea products. You can enjoy a cup of tea at one of the tea houses, and the local restaurants serve Yunnan-style Chinese food and locally brewed fruit wine.

Day 2: Baan Rak Thai to Mae Hong Son
